Modern politics are a mashup of game theory and political pretenses. This setup has many political interactions assimilating to chess mentality rather than a direct attack to any issue that may arise. This is best exemplified through the events of Monday, the 12 of July. Yesterday, 50 House Democrats gathered onto two private jets and flew from Austin to Washington DC. This move was made in order to temporarily deabilitate the state’s House of Representatives from passing a law that would further tighten voting rules in the state of Texas.
While the move does seem to be a direct hit to the HOR, in reality, the democrats did this to bring a larger scale attention to the issue in Texas. Historically speaking, Texas has always played a crucial role in the US Presidential elections. Even if the state has been majority Red since the 1980’s. Given this, by bringing the issue to the forefront of American politics by standing in Washington DC, the 50 democrats are expanding their reach beyond Texas citizens and asking Americans to analyze this situation.
Is it fair for the HOR to enforce stricter voting laws?
What would these laws be?
Well, in short, these laws are primarily focused on creating stricter regulations for voting-by-mail. The House is asking for new ID requirements, a limitation of the distribution of mail-in voting ballots, and a ban on drive thru voting, amongst other reformations. While both House and Senate agree on updating the ID requirements, the issue for democrats arose when the House began stating that they want to limit the distribution of mail-in voting ballots.
This is an issue because this is a direct attack on Harris County, one of the largest, most diverse counties in all of Texas. This county is home to Houston, and home to 4,652,980 citizens. It is the fastest growing area within the state, and poses a challenge to the House as it is primarily composed of minorities. By limiting the distribution of mail-in ballots, a lot of these working-class citizens will not have the chance to receive a ballot thus rendering their vote null. Beyond controlling the distribution, the House would also like to ban 24 hour voting booths, which would eliminate the vote of any working class citizen who is not able to come in during the day to vote.
The House is aware of this and while running full force ahead with the guise that this is a battle on voter fraud, it really is just a defensive maneuver to ensure that the largest “threat” to their Red state is subdued.
While this move by Democrats will not resolve the issue, as stated before, this is a game of chess. They have actively paused the vote, and even though they are most likely simply postponing the inevitable, there is a hidden plan that lies in their hands. In a world that transfers, submits, and shares information in milliseconds, hopefully this drastic move to leave their state to stop a vote, will raise the attention of citizens around the nation. This is not a battle over who is more correct, this is an attack on the US voter.

Hopefully the myopic lens of Left VS Right, Blue VS Red, will not stop Americans from realizing that their vote may be taken away, regardless of who you’re voting for.
